Happy Canada Day!
But, as Buddhists, should we be celebrating Canada Day? Celebrating Canada
Day implies the de-facto agreement of the policies of the country. Do you
agree with the sponsorship scandal? Do you agree with our working with the
U.S. in the testing of agent orange in New Brunswick? There are so many
things to consider.
Or, maybe there is a different perspective to consider, as a Buddhist.
As Buddhists we acknowledge there is more to us than the “self”. We are
part of what “is”. And part of what is, is our country Canada. As
Buddhists we must take responsibility for our greater self., our larger
“body”, our country. Our body encompasses our sangha, our country, the
universe. Through leading by example we can influence the direction of
Canada. We can’t change the past, but we can address the now, and the
direction of the future.
So yes, we should celebrate Canada Day to reaffirm our responsibility to the
body of the country, the universe.
